After Saddam Hussein was captured in 2003 during the Iraq War, he was tried before an Iraqi tribunal and convicted. In November 2006 the tribunal found him guilty of crimes against humanity, which included willful killing, illegal imprisonment, deportation, and torture. He was sentenced to death by hanging. The execution was carried out on December 30, 2006.
