After a century-long struggle for freedom, India and Pakistan won independence from British colonial rule at midnight on August 14–15, 1947. This freedom, however, was bittersweet: while it paved the way for two newly independent countries to forge their own paths, it also brought with it the pain of partition and years of conflict over the disputed region of Kashmir and other issues, as can be gleaned from this timeline.
